Legal deposit has been recognized as an effective means of collecting and
preserving a country's published heritage for more than 450 years. It was
established in 1537 with the Ordonnance de Montpellier enacted by King Francis
I to ensure the collection and preservation of documents published in France.
Since that time, the principle behind legal deposit has been accepted and
practiced internationally as a vital part of building a comprehensive
collection of a nation's published works. It has been in effect in Canada
since the National Library was created in 1953, and now pursued as of 2004 by
Library and Archives Canada.

Bible Records Online is a site
dedicated to transcribing and digitizing the contents of family records that
were written inside family Bibles and in other important documents from as
early as the 1500s through today. Often, these were the only written records of

proving a family genealogy.

Important Information on changes to the General Register Office website
From the 1 April 2009, General Register Office (GRO) information for the
public will move from our current website (
www.gro.gov.uk ) to join the website Directgov. It is intended
that a full launch, supported by a Press Release, will take place on 7 April
2009.
Directgov is a cross-government supersite, the aim of which is to host
information on all public services in one place.
The new website address for GRO is
www.direct.gov.uk/gro . This will take users to an area entitled
“Registering Life Events”. As well as providing easy links to the GRO online
certificate ordering service, it will contain information on the
registration of birth, adoption, stillbirth, marriage, civil partnership and
death as well as guidance on family history and the use of the General
Register Office birth, death and marriage indexes.
The current GRO web address ( www.gro.gov.uk
) will remain active and will host a “homepage” that will guide visitors to
GRO information via links.
The web address for the GRO online ordering service remains the same and can
be found at
http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates . This page can
also be easily accessed via
www.direct.gov.uk/gro .
If you have any queries regarding this initiative please contact the GRO
communications team at

- The University of Leicester's New Opportunities Fund
project is creating a digital library of eighteenth, nineteenth and early
twentieth century local and trade directories from England and Wales.
http://www.historicaldirectories.org/
Directories of counties and towns are among the most important sources for
local and genealogical studies. They include lists of names, addresses and
occupations of the inhabitants of the counties and towns they describe, and
successive editions reflect the changes in the localities over a period of
time.
High quality digital reproductions of a large selection of these comparatively
rare books, previously only found in libraries and record offices, will be
freely available online to anyone with an Internet connection. This online
collection will bring together a greater number and range of directories than
any one repository could provide.
There is also a powerful search engine available so that names, occupations,
addresses and other key words or phrases can be located to their exact places
on pages within the text.

- Address for The Family Records Centre is:- 1 Myddetton
Street, London, EC 1 A 1 UW, England. When in London, it is found within the
larger bounds of Pentonville Road on the north, Clerkenwell Road on the south, Gray’s
In Road on the west and St. John Street on the east, then if you run a diagonal across
that area with Rosebery Avenue, you will find Myddleton St. quite readily.

. Note: In June 2006 they announced that, as part of their Vision,
services currently delivered at the Family Records Centre would be relocated
to Kew by the end of 2008. At the same time they would make improvements to
the services at Kew to accommodate the Family Records Centre service, and
ensure they continue to provide a first-class service.

provide free Internet access to the Civil Registration index information for
England and Wales. The Civil Registration system for recording births,
marriages, and deaths in England and Wales has been in place since 1837 and is
one of the most significant single resources for genealogical research back to
Victorian times. The FreeBMD project contains index information for the period
1837-1983.

UKBMD There are many
areas such as LancashireBMD, YorkshireBMD, NorthwalesBMD, BathBMD etc that are
putting the original registrars' civil registration indexes online. We set up
www.ukbmd.org.uk to be a gateway to them all. Just click on the Local BMD
button on the UKBMD homepage. Many of these Local BMD sites use the UKBMD
software and for these there is also a multi-region search facility -
especially useful where ancestors lived near a county boundary.
These Local BMD sites are taking the records from the primary source (register
offices direct), rather than the GRO's secondary copies of the indexes (used by
Ancestry, FindMyPast, FreeBMD etc). This is a joint effort between volunteers
from the local family history societies and the register offices. The indexes
are FREE to search. (05/11/2008)

UKGDL (UK Genealogical Directories
and Lists Online), www.ukgdl.org.uk
is a companion site to UKBMD (UK Birth, Marriages & Deaths)
UKBMD concentrates on the raw data of family history birth, marriage, death
dates.
UKGDL tries to fill in the gaps in between the dates with how our ancestors
lived and worked. UKGDL has links to sites with trade directories, school
records, immigration and emigration lists, ships lists, occupations, tax
records, sports associations, journals and much more.
Both UKBMD and UKGDL only link to sites where data is online for researchers
- many sites are free to use whilst some sites we link to may charge. (18/03/09)

Webified Genealogy (WebGene) is a tool which
has been produced to view GEDCOM files on the web. It can dynamically produce graphical
pedigree charts, descendant charts, and outlines of genealogy information from a GEDCOM
file. Keep in mind that "dynamically produce them" means that you don't have to
have a bunch of pages and directories which contain the web pages of your genealogy. All
you need is the GEDCOM file (and the tool). Also it is best viewed with Netscape, but
other browsers can see it too.

Vancouver Island
History:-
http://www.vihistory.ca/
This web site is a teaching, learning and research tool. Our web site is
principally about the history of Vancouver Island in British Columbia, but it
is also a vehicle for exploring the larger field of Canadian history during
the late 19th and early part of the 20th century.
On this site, you can search over 100,000 nominal census records of Vancouver
Island residents, native and non-native, for the period 1871 to 1901. You can
also search directories for the cities of Nanaimo and Victoria, and property
tax assessment rolls for the same period. Directories provide the names and
street addresses of business owners, employees, and householders; tax
assessment rolls show the names of property owners and provide information on
the location, size and value of city parcels.
Includes
searchable database of nominal
census records for Vancouver Island and parts of mainland British Columbia
from 1871, 1881, 1891 & 1901. (28/05/07)

LibraryThing
http://www.librarything.com/
LibraryThing is a new site for book
lovers. It's basically two sites in one. LibraryThing helps you create a
library-quality catalog of your books. You can do all of them or just what
you're reading now. And because everyone catalogs online, they also catalog
together. LibraryThing connects people based on the books they share.

Americana
Exchange Rare Books. The url is http://www.americanaexchange.com/
The site offers several services such as listings of books for sale from
many book dealers, and calendars for book auctions and book fairs. However,
the unique and probably most interesting feature for your readers is the
searchable auction database. It is the only place where it is possible to
search upcoming book listings from over 100 worldwide auction houses from
one location all at once. Frequently obscure but important references for
particular families or communities will come up at auction but no place
else. This site provides the only practical means of finding them. (24/10/06)

Tribal Junction
http://www.tribaljunction.com makes it easy and fun to create a
family tree and find distant relatives. As users in your family tree add
more relatives, your tree automatically grows and automatically links to
existing trees of more distant relatives. This lets you discover your roots
more easily, as well as avoid duplicated work of other relatives that have
already built their own trees. With additional user features like group
email, automated notifications, customizable user profiles and more, Tribal
Junction is also a great way for families to better keep in touch.

Genealogy Software Guide
http://www.genealogytoday.com/software/guide.html Welcome to one of the
newest features at Genealogy Today, a comprehensive listing of computer
programs for genealogists. We have sections covering Windows, Macintosh, DOS,
Unix and (the latest craze for mobile genealogists) Palm OS and Windows CE. We
have also organized each package by license (Commercial, Shareware or
Freeware) and functional category (general purpose, reporting, converters, web
page generators) - making it quick and easy for you to find programs matching
your specific needs. With over 200 software programs available for
genealogists, our Genealogy Guide has even more ways for you to distinguish
between programs. First, we list the most recent price and give you links to
the software package home page and demo downloads. Second, we include contact
information so you know who to ask questions. And lastly, we invite users to
rate the family tree software they've used in the past, so on each program
listing you'll see an average score. (Oct 24, 2006)

Clooz 2.1
http://www.clooz.com/features.html The all-new Clooz 2.0 has been
released! Clooz 2.0, the electronic filing cabinet for genealogical records,
has been completely rewritten and now includes more than 100 templates for
specific genealogy records, plus the ability to use generic templates for
those records without a specific template. Clooz is not a genealogy program,
it's a utility that can be used in conjunction with your genealogy program to
keep track of all the papers and electronic documents that you collect during
the research process. In fact, this version of Clooz can work directly with
Legacy Family Tree 6.0, directly saving people and sources added to Clooz. But
users don't need to use Clooz with Legacy--it works on its own as well.
This version of Clooz includes a GEDCOM 5.5 import, making bringing your
people and sources into Clooz a quick and easy process. There is also a
Research Log, where you can enter information about resources as you look at
them, whether you have positive or negative results. If your research results
in a positive find, you can add a Personal File Number to the Research Log
template and then create a new Clooz template based on some of the information
in the Research Log. It's a quick and easy way to record your genealogical
results as you're researching.

Office?
Yes. Microsoft Office is available for the Mac, and Word, PowerPoint, and
Excel files created on a Mac are fully compatible with Windows. Most other
popular applications are available for the Mac, too. But if you need to use
a particular Windows-only application, you have a few options: Boot Camp
comes with every new Mac, and it lets you run Windows natively — as if
your Mac were a PC. If you want to run Mac OS X and Windows side by side,
you can purchase Parallels Desktop for Mac or VMware Fusion.
Install one of these applications, along with the Windows Installation CDs,
and you can run the occasional Windows program right next to your Mac
applications, without having to restart.
